For many people one man was in their mind today at the final stage finish in Skerries, the very missed Gabriel Howard..the weather was playing up..shower after shower and this for the first time in 13 years, it was like a message from where ever he is now. Met his weduwe Kate for the first time since his tragic accident, couldn’t say really anything and just give her a wee kiss..she will understand. So many years the man was enjoying his beloved Ras Tailteann, as rider, stage winner, mechanic, team boss and I could go on and on. This time Gaybo was there in spirit and not forgotten, as his whole family was there with a big banner for all to see..and a Belgian winning the stage made it something to remember for years to come. Bad weather didn’t prevent a big crowd to welcome “The Man of the Ras ” and a very exciting finale..the Swiss leader losing the Yellow at the last 200 meters with 1 second !! The Dutch celebrating their win, the Swiss licking their wounds and the Belgians taking the stage..not bad he’.. hopefully the Ras Tailteann find a main sponsor next year, as it would be a shame to lose such prestigious race in Ireland..here some photos to describe the great atmosphere in Skerries..its special for Ireland and it reminds me of the Belgian races with stalls, pubs on the finishing straight, music and plenty of supporters. The Irish county riders are maybe not pro’s but have the heart and spirit of them, most of them back to their offices and work places tomorrow morning..that demands a lot of respect ..well done all..
