Ulster Junior Enduro Champ Drew Armstrong (Mech Monkey-Killinchy CC) had his first taste of Enduro world series level racing a week ago in Italy. A big learning curve and experience for this young man from County Down. Been given a travel bursary earlier this month by the Belgian Project to help a bit out in a small way he didn’t dissapoint us with a good first solid performance and ready for his next series later in the year..reached the top 30 overall with two top 20 stage places and very promising indeed for the future..photos courtesy of Drew and Freewheelin magasin Here a honest review from the young Killinchy lad in his own words..we wish him success and a safe passage at this discipline of the sport, not for the faint hearted..fast decending 1000 meter down a mountain in 10 minutes ! You need strong guts and skills to do such thing.
Hello, thought i’d let you know how I got on at the 5th round of the Enduro World Series in La Thuile, Italy.
Practice on Thursday and Friday was an eye opener and such a mad crazy experience with each stage being at least 10 mins long and over 1000m descending they were physical for sure and highly demanding on the bike. On Friday night I must have ate something that didn’t agree with me and I suffered the consequences on Saturday with cramps all day and struggling to eat and drink which wasn’t ideal with 35 kms and 2850m climbing. I ended the day in 41st and a lot of work to do on Sunday. This really got to my head and had me not feeling very good/confident about myself, I wasn’t happy with the way I had ridden all day with lots of mistakes and crashes.
On Sunday I pulled myself together and told myself I had to keep pushing no matter what because anything could happen. I rode much better than Saturday and felt a lot more like myself on the bike. Managed two top 20 stage results and pulled myself from 41st to 30th over 4 stages gaining myself some EWS points to climb up the standings a bit.
Was a massive learning curve and can’t wait to do it all over again in September for round 7 & 8.
Thanks again for all your support, Drew
