The race this afternoon was all about tactics who paid off for the Swiss team who had 3 riders in the leading group  with 70km to go, the point that the hard working Irish team had Eddie Dunbar delivered at the front of the race but had to pay the price for their efforts as not strong enough to save a man to help Eddie upfront, never less Eddie was in the position he loves with 3 climbs to come and start pulling at the front with as result many had to hook off and at the second passage of the 5km + climb a 7 man group tried to get distance but 5 of them where called back during that climb which left the Swiss with one man upfront and one Ukraine chap. Eddie saw the danger and went hunting for the leaders (maybe the wrong move as it was all or nothing) with another Swiss on his heels refusing to do any work what is understandable off course with one man “up the road” as we say, came to 6 seconds of the 2 leaders in the downhill but then blew and eased off to the chasers with the Belgians at the front of it, soon be left behind by that group and managed still a top 20 in the end. Then the Belgian favorite Bjorn Lambrecht took action and went to find the front of the race where the eventual Swiss winner Mark Hirschi had shaking off the Ukrainian Mark Padun who lost ground and passed by the the Belgian with his 2 fellow chasers Jaakko Hanninen (Finland) and another Swiss and protected rider Gino Mader who refused to do any work as they new that the Belgian would beat them in a sprint finish. The shouting and bawling of the Belgian went to deaf ears and due to no co operation they never captured the current European Champ and had to sprint for Silver and Bronze that was won by Bjorn with the unknown Finn Jaakko taking the last place on the podium. The Swiss Mader was fourth and earlier leader Mark Padun a respectable 5th..The Swiss deserve this win fully..their tactics worked, the Belgians another medal and the Irish green jerseys seen for more then 2 hours on live TV but sometimes hard work doesn’t pay and clever tactics prevail of stronger nations. Late call Conn Mc Dunphy was the only other finisher of the team and the Holdsworth pro can look back on a hard day at the office with his head up high in such company !
