The long awaited win came around today in Armagh for Mc Convey’s Graham Boyd, already showing his intention last week at the UCI cross in Mallusk with a 3th and now showing his teeth as a serious contender for the overall win of the Ulster league, with Darnell Moore, Glenn Kinning and revelation of 2019 Angus Fyffe not present today didn’t mean he had an easy job..you still have to win the race and focus to not make mistakes..each lap his advantage grew a bit, especially at the climb to the top of the palace grounds, which had to be tackled for 7 times but not been given easy away by his rivals Lewis Ferguson (The Bike House Bangor) and in form Alan Bingham (Newry Wheelers) who had their own battle and entertained the crowd doing so..Lewis a very deserved second and Alan taking the 3th spot. In the race the juniors had their own battle to..Ciaran Dixon (Mc Convey Cycles) had the better of upcoming CX star Paul Antoine Hagan from TVR . Before the Men elite A race we had the U14-U16 boys and girls race followed by the Women’s Race with the MTB ladies as support race at the main course with his beautiful back drops and open spaces including a severe climb to make this a very difficult task for all competitors. In the women’s race ex Irish & Ulster off road Champ Ciara MacManus got away in round 1 and kept her advantage till the end with an impressive win and showed that she is not finished yet in the sport (last week Ciara was 6th in the UCI Women’s race and the writing was on the wall), Asia Bula ( Scott- Eurocycles) got herself a good result again and won the battle for second place with CarnWheelers junior revelation Darcey Harkness grabbing the 3th spot and she had to work for that as Niamh Mc Kiverigan (Powerhouse Sport) lurking all race and taking 4th..both girls are 16 years old and coming closer and closer to the much older elite women..that’s a promising sign for the future and keep the older girls on their toes. The U16 boys race was won in a dominating style of Darren Rafferty from Island Wheelers who just made a gap and increased it to a massive one to win with a lot to spare..Darren had made sure in the first few laps that his advantage would be secure, despite the efforts of the Omagh chasers Somhairle Owens Fisher and Joe Owens to get closer, it didn’t happen and they had to be happy with a podium place and not a shame with Darren in top form. The U16 girls had their own  battles to with Annie Roche (Scott-Orwell Dublin) beating Erin Creighton (X-MTB) and Island Wheeler’s Maria Mc Allister a deserved 3th place.  The U/14 Boys race was won by Travis Harkness (brother of Darcey) and the U14 Girls race by VC Glendale’s Imp star Aine Doherty who is on a winning streak since the start of the season and very hard to beat ! Next week Aine will be showing her talents at her home race and will be odds on to win again. We had the Under Age racing in the morning on a smaller course and witnessed by hundreds of parents and supporters and always the most popular races of the day ..and we finished the day with the B-race with again a big field as we now accustomed are of the lads and also supported by the MTB race a few instances behind the B-riders. The Cx race was won by Raymond Rocks (Island Wheelers) who overtook the early leader Paul Ferguson in the last laps and rocked his way to the finish in style..his team mate Dean Burnside a very respectable 3th. An October sun made this a very pleasant day..the ground was heavy at some places due to the weather we had last week but overall in very good condition and cleverly used by the designers of the course. The hospitality of the promoting club was excellent, all day food and hot drinks for every one and at no cost !! You would not find that in the Belgian Crosses as this make our crosses unique and very enjoyable! Well done Square Wheels and his volunteers, a day to be repeated !
