Mayo’s Maria Larkin

Final preparations for the Nationals in Cork saw the USA based Maria Larkin (The Call-Up P/B Bike Law) stopping over in Belgium for two races before travelling to Cork. Her first race was on Saturday last in Gullegem West Flanders for the brand new class 2 UCI CX and she settled ok with finishing in the same lap as the winner Loes Sels (Pauwels Sauzes/Vast goed -Services)┬áin 31st. place out of 41 top world UCI riders. On Sunday in University grounds of Brussels for the “Sack Zelfbouw Ladies Trophy GP” (Class 2 UCI) she was 29th out of 36 and now ready for the task in Cork. David Conroy was competing in the same races but had a massive crash at the start in Gullegem and couldn’t go further with a sore ankle and some flesh wounds (so did 6 others involved in the crash) and needed some medical attention. He was sort of fine the next day and travelled to Brussels for his last race before the big battle in Cork. David showed his resilience with a 24th finish out of 36 top entries and hopefully can fire on all cylinders in Cork as he will have to be at his best with David Montgomery, Darnell Moore and Richard Maes in splendid form, not forgetting Thomas Creighton and Paul O’Reilly who could knock on the podium door to. In the Ladies race, it is hard to look behind Maria and Lara Gillespie but with Michelle Geoghegan in fine form with a win yesterday in Cork, and upcoming Lucy O’ Donnell and Darcy Harkness as talented juniors we are in for a cracker for sure..See you all at Fota House Cork at the weekend and smile as the BP media is about, and mine is a pint of Guinness if you meet me at the pub on Saturday night

Hard fecker that young lad
Here in his own words>>
Final weekend of racing before nationals done. Cyclocross Gullegem and DVV Brussels university. Unfortunate start to the weekend with a big crash in the start on Saturday in Gullegem, came down heavy on my ankle and wasn’t 100% sure on being able to race Sunday. Decided to try race and see how it would go. Brussels university was a new venue on the cross calendar this year and the organisers had made a nice and technical lap. Body was in recovery but had fun and ended up 24th. Recovery week now and flying home on Thursday for nationals next weekend in Cork. @ Brussels, Belgium
