Our youth off road racing in Ireland begins to get momentum..look at their determent in their wee faces

Award-winning Omagh Wheelers (County Tyrone) are known for their excellent events they promote such as the “Spar 3 Day”, the very popular “Mc Cann Cup” and even the National Champs a few years ago, all on the road racing circuit but now have added another scalp on their list! They had already some background and expertise in the MTB world and now added Cyclo-Cross to their list of well-executed cycling events. To start they choose a perfect setting in the Ecclesville Center in Fintona (a few miles away from Omagh Town) who has wood sections with a climb that bites the calves, very fast grass sections and muddy turns. As many riders present saw this as a last preparation before the nationals in Cork coming weekend, we were served with some fear competition, shitty weather (strangely liked by many of us..lol) and a happy new year sort of feeling between us. The Belgian project was been invited to do the MC job and provide the music to add to the atmosphere including some media work and proudly accepted..some fresh air after been cooked up home with the past festivities. Our main photographer David Mc Veigh was free to help out, his work can be seen on our link at Flickr ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/thebelgianproject/albums/72157675294243027/ ) David will add photos in the coming days including an interview with the Race organiser and top coach Olly Logan (National GB swimming coach who works with Olympians) and Omagh Wheelers youth workshop coach.

Thomas Creighton in fine form and ready for next week as contender for the U23 title

Omagh Wheelers got big help from their neighbouring clubs to provide the volunteers needed and things went very smoothly indeed. Add the expertise of the 3 commissaire’s on duty ( Chief Martin Grimley, Lisa Millar as chief timekeeper/judge and pit comm Jim Adams) to the event and a hard-working crew in the wet conditions… we got a top event and hopefully will be an annual occasion. With 150 entries for the first time promoting it will hopefully be encouraging enough to repeat in the future.
