Resumption of Cycling Activities at Mondello Park
Cycling Ireland, Mondello Park, and Usher Irish Road Club are delighted to announce the
resumption of Cycling Activities at Mondello Park. Following various incidents and actions over recent weeks, it had been deemed necessary to temporarily suspend cycling activities at the famous venue pending a review of the promotion of Cycling events. That review has now drawn to a satisfactory conclusion, with the venue once again available
to facilitate cycling activities. Mondello Park has been hosting cycling activities for all age categories up to three nights a week with the popular Mondello Series on Tuesday evenings, the Bikeology Youth Series on Wednesday evenings, and Interclub League racing on Thursday evenings.
With its 3.5km circuit that is 10 meters wide, the venue is free from traffic and potholes and
has proven to be the go-to place for safe cycling events and competitive racing.
Such is the sport’s popularity; Mondello Park will also be promoting their own cycling event,
the Mondello 24, a 24 hr Endurance Cycle on October 16th and 17th, with details available
here. Alice Sherratt of Usher Irish Road Club welcomed the return of the venue, saying, “it is just
great that we can provide a safe venue for the road racing community, particularly for the
youth of the sport. The actions of a minority over the last week have been extremely
disappointing, and we thank the wider cycling community for their overwhelming support
throughout. We also would like to thank Cycling Ireland, who have been of great assistance
to Mondello Park in ensuring a speedy return to competition.”
Ciaran McKenna, President of Cycling Ireland said, “Mondello Park has become such an
important venue for Cycling Ireland activities over the past 6 years, it is incredibly important
for this relationship to continue to the benefit of all our members, we are thankful for
Mondello Park for their understanding over the past weeks and look forward to the
resumption of cycling activities.”Roddy Greene, Managing Director of Mondello Park, said, “As the home of Irish motorsport, it has been great to broaden the competitor base at Mondello Park by facilitating cycling events. We have found the events to be professionally organised, and it has been a pleasure to deal with Usher Irish Road Club over the last number of years. The recent discussions
with Cycling Ireland regarding future events have been very positive, and we are delighted
to be in a position to welcome the resumption of cycling events at the circuit.
We are looking forward to a successful season and aim to end the season on a high note
with Ireland’s first 24-hour cycle event, Mondello 24, which will take place here in Mondello
Park on October 16th & 17th. This event will appeal to many competitors, from the serious
ultra-distance competitor to 8 person teams looking for a different challenge”
