18-year-old Miel Dekien, who was supposed to make his debut in the U23 category in 2025, died in “a tragic traffic accident”. Not during training on the bike, but as a passenger in a car accident in Beerst near Diksmuide. A car with three youngsters, including Dekien, went through the fence of a meadow on Friday evening and ended up in a farmer’s pond. Two 18-year-olds were killed. Dekien, the second-year junior of Air College Oostende, who came 4th in the GP Bob Jungels this season, had successfully made the switch from cyclo-cross to road cycling.
