Rik Masil (above) is well-known coach for young footballers, but here in Ireland, he is better known for being an adopted father for Irish young talent together with his wife Sabien Himpe. I came aware of this family in 2010 when I was introduced to Rik and Sabien by Peter Hawkins ex-pro, who was at the time one of my Belgian Project graduates and they agreed soon after to look after some of my graduates when racing in Belgium. Rik had already some pedigree in the cycling world with looking after Sam Bennett when racing in Belgium a few years before the Belgian Project started and it was a no-brainer to send young lads to his home, and this already for 10 years. He was just like Michael Bennett (Sam’s dad) playing football for the 3rd Division team Eendracht Wervik, and their friendship carried on after their career in soccer. Rik and Sabien visit every year the Nationals in Ireland to see their adopted sons racing and follow their progress, and hopefully next year they can welcome some of my successful graduates again. when this terrible COVID-19 is beaten or contained. This year it was just not possible to send our youngsters to our guest families. The supporters club “Go Sam” already exists 6 years and situated in Moorslede, a village near Menen close to the French border in West Flanders. They even organising coaches to see Sam racing in the continent. Rik told Focus TV that Sam was not cut out for soccer, his feet too big for a start …lol, and from 4 years of age, Sam starts loving the bike, and well …look what he has achieved…A feel-good story is seen by millions on Belgian TV ( down below in Flemish) and Sam is a special guest on the nation’s most popular Irish TV show tonight (Friday 25th September)The Late Late Show RTÉ starts at 9 30 pm

Rik en Sabien bezoeken elk jaar de Nationals in Ierland om hun geadopteerde zonen te zien racen en hun vorderingen te volgen, en hopelijk kunnen ze volgend jaar weer een aantal van mijn succesvolle afgestudeerden verwelkomen. wanneer deze vreselijke COVID-19 wordt verslagen of in bedwang gehouden. Dit jaar was het gewoon niet mogelijk om onze jongeren naar onze gastgezinnen te sturen.
