Wout van Aert wins the Amstel Gold Race…JUST… mind you! Van Aert beat Tom Pidcock and Maximilian Schachmann in an mm sprint, the jury needed a lot of time to study the photo finish. The difference between Van Aert and Pidcock could not be seen with the naked eye. A very anxious moment for both riders and teams…Maximilian from Bora always knew he would be 3rd but he couldn’t get away from them. The 3 got away from an impressive group of favourites in the penultimate lap which includes 3 nasty short climbs and too much power between them to be caught again, the chasers came very close in the last km, but this because of the slowing down of the leaders who eyed each other… Van Aert took the sprint to them and just hit the line on time as Pidcock threw himself to the line…I actually thought he won due to the angle of the TV camera. Have to mention Eddie Dunbar, a teammate of Tom with Ineos-Grenadiers…he worked his socks off during the race to keep his team up front, even attacked at one moment…we will hear more of him for sure this season!! This race was part of the Ardennes Classic’s and we can admire the peloton again this Wednesday with the “Waalse Pijl-La Fleche Wallonne” and “Liege-Bastogne-Liege” this coming Sunday…In both races, we have a women’s edition.

A talent to be nursed!! Tom Pidcock is on his way to become a feared classic rider (photo courtesy of @Belga with thanks)
