It is part of the cycling sport but still under the radar for most of us, but once you witnessed this skilfull way of racing a wee bike with no brakes and massive helmets, this in a safe environment you easily could be hooked. Any such sport deserves a bit of PR and due to a free weekend for us which not often happens, we decided to give this our full attention. Only a half an hour away from our HQ in Newtownards the Lisburn BMX club has his fully enclosed track and had their second round of the Winter Series on Sunday the 26th of January. A purpose-built track that compiles with UCI standards, one of a handful in Ireland and run by a team of volunteers dedicated to their youngsters

We had an interview with two stalwarts of the sport called Brian Mallon (Current Irish Master Champ and vice president) and George Gordon (President) and both ex-world level pro’s who have been instrumental in the success of the Lisburn club. They lead an army of volunteers and helped by the parents of the younger ones in the club. We will publicise their story later in the week on this forum which explains much more in detail.

As I have not much knowledge of the ins and outs of the sport, I prefer to show you some pictures of the event which give you a good idea whats it is all about…but one thing I felt during the day…a sense of camaraderie, dedication of their volunteers, skills of such young cyclists and the competitivity which made it a very spectacular and friendly part of our beloved sport.

The most important part of any sport>>>FUN!!!! More info can be obtained with the Lisburn club on www.lisburnbmxclub.co.uk
