A mini team has been sent to Italy to represent Ireland at the Junior & Under 23 European Track Champs in Italy, In light of the current Covid-19 pandemic, Cycling Ireland consulted with Sport Ireland late last week, who recommended and endorsed only carded athletes should travel to the event. Mia Griffin, Lara Gillespie, and Jack Bernard Murphy (JB for his friends) will compete in this high-level event and The team will compete across multiple events over the course of the week including the Individual Pursuit, Omnium, Madison, Points, Scratch, and Elimination races. The first day was yesterday and already a medal gained!! 21-year-old Mia took bronze in the Individual pursuit, while Lara was a very respectable 6th in the same event. JB had his first race in the Elimination race (Devil’s Tail) and managed a top 10 with an 8th place. Mia also raced in the Scratch and also managed a top 10 coming in 7th. Not a bad day for our talent full youngsters wouldn’t you say!! Both girls have been bursary holders in 2019 for the Belgian Project which made me a happy man, just seeing them doing so well. Both girls have been in action last Sunday at the National RR Champs in Newcastle West, Lara won the Elite women’s race while Mia was a close 4th just missing out on a medal. JB also competed in the Men’s edition and was 16th. So they didn’t have much rest between mayor events and still performing at such a high level in great fashion…So well done to you all
