A very early start for our teenagers, yes you read it right 7.50 am, this due to the Elite race to be scheduled at 10 am. They had to race the 40km or 2 laps of a circuit that even the pro’s find difficult. Soon 2 girls took charge and disappeared in the horizon and never to be challenged again. Lara Gillespie (Scott Orwell CC) as the favourite and 2018 champ, and Maeve Gallagher (Castlebar CC) who last year asked questions already and now progressed to the top of the podium as she left Lara behind in the last lap to take the jersey of Lara’s shoulders so to speak. Only 4 other girls left on the circuit, and they had to race for bronze and was won by Caoimhe O’Brien (Lakeside WheelersMullingar) with Ciara Kelly (TC Racing) in her wheel taking 4th followed close by Lucy O’Donnell from O’Leary Stone and Faith Hilliard in 6th place…My admirations to these girls including the ones who had bad luck and had to abandon the race…racing so early and with not many people about it can be difficult for the mind, and you all stepped over that hurdle…it adds to the spirit of a championship!!
