Belgian Project “sponsor in-kind” Carl Fullerton (Donegal Harvest Potatoes & TT enthusiast and M70 Ulster Champ) told us this morning: “ It is with great regret that I would like to inform the cycling public that the race proposed for St.Patricks Day at Ballyliffin will not now proceed. The promotions group of which I am chair, were unable to find a Donegal-based Cycling Ireland registered club willing to step forward to host this event. To attempt to run the event without Cycling Ireland insurance was not a feasible option.
I would like to thank the many individuals who stepped forward in a personal capacity to offer us help and encouragement. Some of these were from outside the locality and their offers are deeply appreciated. I am particularly indebted to Michael McGonagle of The Ballyliffin Hotel for his kind offer of the facilities of his fine hotel. I have now been in contact with Cycling Ulster about the need for competitive events in Donegal. The development of the sport and the creation of career paths for youths and junior cyclists depends on a vibrant local competitive scene. Currently, our young riders are having to travel on round trip journeys of 300k or more to take part in cycling events. Hopefully, the Cycling Ulster Executive Board will address the issues which I have highlighted. Press release: Cycling Connacht Gearing Up For Provincial Leisure Cycling Series.
The cycling season is virtually upon us and Cycling Connacht Leisure rep John Greene is encouraging all cyclists to get back out on their bike doing what they always did and that’s enjoying the great outdoors on two wheels. Speaking about the series John said “We all need a reason to get out and train and what better goal to have than doing a cycle in each County in Connacht. Each provincial club in the series is working together to get their members cycling in five fantastic events across five Counties in twelve weeks.” The individual events are well known in their own right, but this year they are all coming together to support each other and to give Leisure Cyclists across the country an opportunity to meet up, interact, have some fun, make new friends and explore routes and roads they may never have enjoyed on two wheels previously. All five clubs are encouraging their members to take part, firstly in their own local Sportif but also to sample some or all of the others; with the spacing of dates, it does allow for cyclists to enter all five events if they feel up to it! Plenty of miles of fun, fitness, and friendship are to be enjoyed by all taking part in the events. So time to get planning your Summer Sportif Calendar and take on the Cycling Connacht Leisure Series in 2022!
