Cork City Council…catch yourself on…De Ronde van Cork CX of the 17th Nov is cancelled!! Also all cycling events on their grounds including the closure of Cork’s BMX Track due to a ridiculous insurance malarky…Whatever next they hit us with. Cycling Ireland provide insurance that normally is adequate for any event in the land, all riders have adequate cover…what is the problem Cork City Council…hundreds of people would have visit your town and spend money…lots of youngsters been denied a healthy way of living in your city…shame on you… (report Dany Blondeel, photos borrowed from Sean Rowe)

ITS ALL UPHIL FOR MICHEAL CORKERY and his beloved club…we feel for you.
Here the official notice of De Ronde van Cork club

It is with a heavy heart that we must report that this year’s race will not be going ahead as planned on Nov 17th. Also, our planned youth training camp that was being planned in co-ordination with Cork Sports Partnership will not be going ahead at the park.
Cork City council have taken the position that our Cycling Ireland Insurance is not adequate and leaves the Council exposed to possible claims if there was, in their words, a life-altering injury, resulting from a rider to rider incident. We believe and argued that this position was extreme. As a result of this policy no Cycling Ireland activity can happen at any park run by Cork City Council, and by implication the road also. As a direct result, the BMX track is also closed.
Cork City council stated in all their correspondences that they continue to support the sport. The insurance that they are looking for does not exist in the marketplace. This episode points to the very real potential of far-reaching implications for many sports events around the county-run on a volunteer basis and insurance industry (from claim to quote to claim) running rings around us all. We hope this can be solved over the long term and we can host the event in the future again.
This would have been the 5th year of DeRonde CROSS
