Ultra Racers descend on Mayo. (Padraig Marrey reports)
The Wild Mayo Ultra cycling event kicks off today Friday May 12th, starting outside the Mariner hotel, Mill st, Westport.
The minimum requirement to be recognised as an Ultra cyclist, is to cycle 200 kilometers solo in under 10hours, The Wild Mayo is also catering for a large number of Ultra newbies so it will be great to see participants start a new chapter in their cycling careers.
All the riders cycle solo, the blue ribbon event is the 650k course which basically takes in all the coastal and border roads of Mayo along with every mountain road that’s passable.
It’s well worth a visit to the start line to see what these kinds of athletes look like and what type of bike they use. The 650k participants start today at 2pm at 3minute intervals
The 500k start at 8pm this evening
On Saturday the 300k participants start at 7am with the 200k riders off from 8.30m..
